Enabling USB Flash Drives

Dec 18, 2009

Recently one of my site readers asked me how to add permission to limited user accounts user to install USB or Flash drivers without inserting any credential. This happens when when you are not the administrator of the computer and you are not able run your flash drives. Do not worry, this is some simple steps where you can allow limited user to install they flash drives with limited user privileges. Proceed as below:

Log in as administrator from your domain computer:

Navigate to the following folder :

C:\WINDOWS\inf and look for the following files.

C:\WINDOWS \inf\ usbstor.PNF
C:\WINDOWS \inf\ usbstor.INF

Right click on the files and select properties and choose security. Now add the permission to designated group of users.

USB

Restart your computer.

Should the issue perist, Please proceed as below :

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ServicesUsbStor\
4. In the details pane, double-click Start.
5. In the Value data box, type 4, click Hexadecimal (if it is not already selected), and then click OK.
6. Exit Registry Editor.

Good Luck Mates.
