Is Window Prefetcher files Important?
Hi recently on of you (reader) email me about what is this prefetcher files all about in typically window XP operating system. Basically this is the component of memory manger of the operating system thats speeds up the Windows boot process, and shortens the amount of time it takes to start up programs. In Windows Vista, SuperFetch and ReadyBoost extend upon the prefetcher and attempt to accelerate application and boot launch times respectively by monitoring and adapting to usage patterns over periods of time and loading the majority of the files and data needed by them into memory so that they can be accessed very quickly when needed.
Is it safe to delete them ?
In my honest opinion, never remove prefetch files manually – EVER. It is highly advised against doing so, since Windows automatically handles removing prefetches as appropriate; if you manually clear them, you could experience firmware problems, performance loss, etcetera. It has been reviewed countless times in PC Magazine, etcetera, and every time advised against.
How do i configure them ?
The Prefetcher’s files are located in:
C:WINDOWSPrefetch
The Prefetcher’s configuration is stored in the Windows Registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSessionManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters. The EnablePrefetcher value can set to be one of the following:
0 = Disabled
1 = Application launch prefetching enabled
2 = Boot prefetching enabled
3 = Applaunch and Boot enabled (Optimal and Default).
The recommended value is 3
Note: Modifying any registry could be harmful for your computer and should be modified by only advanced user of a computer. I would not be liable for any damage or loss
good luck and cheers.
